WATERCOOLER CHAT: Expansion Workplace Strategy
A visionary workplace design strategy is very important when you are managing rapid growth while simultaneously exceeding industry demands. TELUS is a leading telecommunications provider in Canada. Like many organizations in its industry, TELUS has grown dramatically in recent years, both organically and through strategic acquisitions.
TELUS worked with Steelcase to craft a highly functional office space that defined their future while embracing their past. Newly merged organizations need to leverage economies of scope and scale yet this often precludes immediately combining offices and staff who are usually widely dispersed. In fact, the need to rethink offices is often delayed for any company that’s experienced major organizational change. TELUS decided to organize their workplace the same way the company is organized, around three types of business units, where people who serve the same clients would work in close proximity:
- Customer-facing business units (e.g. consumer solutions, business solutions)
- Enabling business units (e.g. technology operations)
- Supporting business units (HR, finance, etc.)
Expanding the scope of possibilities for an upscale or an expansion can provide your teams with a space that more accurately fits flexible working. If your office is transitioning, we hope this case study will give you some good insights into workplace design strategy. Our team of project managers and designers can help you find the best solution. Better spaces make better businesses, boost morale, and deepen brand immersion.
